I’ve successfully e-filed my renewal and got the approval for both EAD and AP in just two weeks. It’s really a good system.
My case is little different though – When I entered US this time, I had H1 approval but not the stamping in my passport (didn’t want to go through the stamping hassle), so I used my AP at the port of entry.
When I renewed my EAD and AP online, I mentioned, “I entered using AP” and my current status is “H1”. There were no queries, and got the approval.

you dont need to have ssn in hand to start work only EAD. Apply for SSn and the employer will be handed over docs of application, it takes 4-6 weeks to get the card.
if she already has TIN then do inform irs of the change and paprfile tax returns next year

@sduddukuri - Can you share why H4 was denied in the first place? I am in a similar situation and wondering if MTR or Travel abroad would be better.

Yesterday USCIS announced officially that they need 1300 officers.
Their recruitment, training etc itself is going to take about 4-5 months.
So I am now guessing that it surely will take about 4 years for them to fix this big issue of retrogression and also hopefully someone increases the VISA numbers by then.
Closing this thread from my perspective since I have some good information.

Did they give you a temporary one or they straight away issued a new permanent DL. Right now all I have is a sheet of paper with my name that states temporary drivers license. I cant even walk in a bar to buy beer ... its annoying!
uuuhhh. I can atleast respond to the drink question! use your passport. that is valid proof of age. The law does not require everyone to have a drivers license. Driving is a privilage.......not a right. So, feel free to take your passport in as proof of age and enjoy the drinks :D

Just wanted to update about my case. After multiple calls each day, daily emails and faxes (for about 3 weeks which totals close to 14/15 emails and same number of faxes), I finally got a call back from Indian Consuldate in DC. <sarcasm> Indian consulate at it's best :p <\sarcasm>. They are going to process the application today and send it out in mail tomorrow. I guess better late than never. I had almost finalized my plans to drive 5 hours to DC on Friday and pick up my passport. I just want to give heads up to folks who may be trying to renew passport via mail at DC consulate. Please factor in at least 5/6 weeks of the processing time in case you have plans to go out of the country.

We were successful in getting good media coverage with flower campaign. Our San Jose rally is getting good regional coverage. Yes, we haven't had the expected success with national media yet but we are gaining traction at an amazing pace.
This is not a big corporation with some PR dept. that is working with hundred of employees writing press releases et al. Volunteers like you and me have to take on that action item if you want to see results otherwise please continue on with your discussion
That is absolutely right, it is our job to write to reporters and call them, if we want good publicity. Please digg, write to reporters, do not just wait on the sidelines and see if we have gotten any coverage. We wont get any by just being on the forums discussing.

People came upto him and asked him to arrange another rally next week. He answered it very well. Why dont people take ownership and organise things on their own, rather than just giving out suggestions and expecting other people to do the tough work.

Hi,
As with many of the people around, my wife got her SSN last year. She has started working as a consultant on 1099 since early Jan 2008. So, there is no issue for the 2007 tax return. However, I have few questions regarding the estimated tax payment this year. Since this is the first time we have come across 1099 based employment, we are very confused about how to pay taxes.
As her employment is based on 1099, the employer is not deducting any taxes. I got the 1040-ES form from IRS website. These are the specific questions:
1. Does the Estimated tax voucher need to be sent in joint names? We file joint returns together but I work on W-2 and she works on 1099.
2. Does 1040-ES form need to be used for all the estimated Federal payments (Federal Tax + SSN Tax + Medicare Tax)? Or there are separate forms for sending the SSN and Medicare taxes?
3. I live in California so I will need to use 540-ES as well for the CA state tax payment, correct?

My current passport is expiring in Jun 07. I have applied for passport renewal at Indian Embassy (Washington D.C.) in 3rd week of Jan 07 via courier. I may have to travel urgently to India by end of this month. Just wondering if anyone recently got their passport renewed at DC and what was the duration. It will help me to take the decision about departure date. Unfortunately DC is 5 hours drive from where I live. I am not sure even if take a day off and drive to DC to collect the passport they will even give it to me on the same day. Multiple attempts to contact DC office via phone/email were not helpful. No one picks the phone and their voice mail system is always full. Any advise on what I should to do know status of my passport renewal would be appreciated.

I have taken filights to Indore from both Mumbai and Delhi. There is not much difference per say, both of them provide you the shuttle to domestic airport. The delhi shuttle takes slightly longer (like 10 mins more). Both places have good facilities to wait too.
So I guess take whichever is cheaper.
One important point to remember though is that if you are travelling in Dec and Jan, Delhi does get a lot of fog and flights get delayed. So if your domestic flight got delayed, you might the international one or if the international one get delayed then you might be stuck in delhi for a while. I got stuck there for a day (although the airline provided nice accomadation).
So if going in Dec or Jan, choose Mumbai.
So I guess take whichever is cheaper.

No wonder they can do this , after loosing the case 2 times in the lower courts now they are taking the case to supreme court. Well they got the money , lawyers and dedicated paid employees to work on it fulltime, they can do all they want. Advertise on CNN and get a complete page ad on WSJ. But we have got guys who are sitting on the margins waiting for their Labor to approve to start making the donation. Well you may not last that long here in US to make the donation my friend in this case.
Also guys don't think antis have got problem with only H1B, no, they hate everyone. Don't think you got EAD so you are safe. They are going to target everyone. They are racist and hate anyone who is Indian.

WD is right that this is a model for groups with specific issues within iv. it is not possible for iv leaders to maintain focus on every issue in the realm of this warped system. as an organization it is only appropriate for iv to focus on the big overarching goal of ending retrogression to benefit all.
however specific groups do have a way to take initiative for their issues within the iv framework. it is necessary though to find leaders, take initiative and build your own momentum with continuous efforts.
iv-physicians is a model for this and it's hopefully continued and eventual success will inspire others.

A customer-centric home page that provides applicants with a �one-stop shop� of immigration services information.
Simplified navigation and improved search capability.
Enhanced customer service tools including expanded Case Status Online with both email and text functionality.
Information that is written clearly and meets the needs of our customers.
It is pretty vague. They may just make some cosmetic changes for the existing website. I dont see anything new here. I hope they prove me wrong!
